Interplays Between Mantle Flow and Slab Pull at Subduction Zones in 3D

چکیده
The understanding of the interactions between subduction-induced mantle flow and background (being global or regional) remains incomplete despite its potential impact on subduction dynamics associated deformation. Here we present results three-dimensional laboratory models zones at scale upper in which systematically vary plate's width trench perpendicular flow. In particular, test different magnitudes directions flow, evaluate their slab geometry vertical plane, shape evolution, superficial horizontal While chosen viscosity ratio convective subducting plate our (∼100) is favorable to deformation through displacement, show that plane only marginally affected by imposed Instead, has a larger kinematics trench. It reduces along-trench variations kinematics, turn decreases curvature, it largely disturbs pattern edges, inhibiting development toroidal cells. We also thickness layer (here, mantle) controls component length curvature for large zones.

Metamorphic evolution along the slab/ mantle interface within subduction zones
One view of the metamorphic subduction system supposes that coupled deformation and prograde/metasomatic reaction between the chemically enriched slab and the depleted mantle wedge promotes the formation of complexly hybridized lithologies along the slab/mantle interface. This type of model is based upon direct observations of the structure and petrology of high-P/T metamorphic complexes (e.g.,...
متن کاملSub-slab seismic anisotropy and mantle flow beneath the Caribbean and Scotia subduction zones Effects of slab morphology and kinematics
Subduction systems are vitally important to plate tectonics and mantle convection, but questions remain about many aspects of subduction dynamics, particularly the nature of sub-slab mantle flow. Observations of seismic anisotropy can shed light on the pattern of mantle flow in subduction systems, but major uncertainties remain regarding the interpretation of sub-slab anisotropy. Here, we prese...
متن کاملMid-mantle anisotropy in subduction zones and deep water transport
The Earth’s transition zone has until recently been assumed to be seismically isotropic. Increasingly, however, evidence suggests that ordering of material over seismic wavelengths occurs there, but it is unclear what causes this. We use the method of source-side shear wave splitting to examine the anisotropy surrounding earthquakes deeper than 200 km in slabs around the globe. We find signific...
متن کاملThe temporal evolution of plate driving forces: Importance of slab suction versus slab pull during the Cenozoic
[1] Although mantle slabs ultimately drive plate motions, the mechanism by which they do so remains unclear. A detached slab descending through the mantle will excite mantle flow that exerts shear tractions on the base of the surface plates. This ‘‘slab suction’’ force drives subducting and overriding plates symmetrically toward subduction zones. Alternatively, cold, strong slabs may effectivel...
متن کاملSlab pull, mantle convection, and Pangaean assembly and dispersal
Two global-scale mantle convection cells presently exist on Earth, centred on upwelling zones in the South Pacific Ocean and northeast Africa: one cell (Panthalassan) contains only oceanic plates, the other (Pangaean) contains all the continental plates. They have remained fixed relative to one another for s 400 Ma. A transverse (Rheic^Tethyian) subduction system splits the Pangaean cell. Poloi...
